Of people I talk to about fasting, probably the most frequent question I hear is:
Aren’t you hungry while fasting?
Truth is, that you don’t feel hungry very often while fasting. The hunger you do feel is relatively minor, and happens only the first couple of days, at least in my experience.
When I tell this to people, I can tell that the vast majority of the people that I tell this to are either very skeptical or they just don’t believe me at all. Some people have come right out and told me that I am lying.
Funny thing is the people who ask me that question are people that have never fasted, or only lasted for a short time years ago.
On the other hand, if I talk to people who do fast on a regular basis, or watch their videos on YouTube, read what they write, etc., they ALL say the same thing that I experience, that hunger is not a big issue.
Yesterday, I was watching a video on this very topic. The guy had some good formation, both first first-hand information that he had experienced while fasting himself, medical studies, and even some information from Dr. Fung. I found it a very good video. If you are interested, give it a view here:
So, when people that have all done extended fasting say that hunger is not a problem and people who have never done long term fasting say that hunger would be terrible… who are you going to believe?
For me, the answer is simple!

Truly inspiring. I’ve only managed one 3 day fast, and now on day 3 of second fast. It would seem for me day 3 is hardest. I’m hungry, cold and weak. I should probably try to hold out longer and see if it improves. Note I’m not doing this for weight loss. With only 11.2% body fat possibly I’m running out of reserves.

Michael – we are all different. I find day 2 the most difficult and after that is smooth sailing pretty much. Good luck to you!

Hey Bob, stupid question for ya , do you find yourself more tired from fasting , because I always thought you get energy from food , do you take supplements , vitamins or anything to give you energy while your fasting , I guess that’s 2 questions
Bob Martin
It is the opposite. You have a huge surge of energy while fasting. I know that is counter intuitive. Think about it this way.. if you get fasting from eating food… why is it that after you stuff yourself at Thanksgiving dinner you are not a ball of energy? Most people go lay down after Thanksgiving dinner and are lethargic! 🙂

I do take a multivitamin daily just to make sure my body gets the important things it needs. But, it has nothing to do with needing energy. I have so much energy while fasting that I can barely sleep.. I get only a couple hours sleep a night while fasting, because my body does not need more.

Interesting Bob , I would have never thought you had energy without eating , I guess maybe because your using the calories that are stored in the body , and I always thought it was the Tryptophan after Thanksgiving that made me tired ð
Bob Martin
I think you are exactly right. Your body is still eating, but it is not food you are putting in your mouth.. it is food that you ate a long time ago that your body stored away as fat! 🙂 I think that we get sleepy and tired if we eat ham or anything else, no turkey, if we eat a huge meal. Think about in some cultures they have siesta after lunch. Gotta rest after the meal. 🙂
