Anybody who has been following this blog with any degree of regularity will know that I am a huge fan and follower of Dr. Jason Fung. Dr. Fung is a Nephrologist in Canada. Dr. Fung operates the Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) program in Toronto Canada. Dr. Fung founded this program and is the Medical Director of the program. He completed medical school and internal medicine at the University of Toronto before finishing his nephrology fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai hospital. He joined Scarborough General Hospital in 2001 where he continues to practice.
I first found out about Dr. Fung in February of this year, and he changed my life since then. I am a huge fan!
The IDM program has what they call a “Long Distance Program”. Under this program, people who are not located in Toronto can get dietary support from Dr. Fung and his team. This Long Distance Program is done through group sessions on the Internet. As I recall, I believe that the groups are 4 or 5 people per group.
I feel quite comfortable in doing Dr. Fung’s program myself, but I also feel that becoming part of the IDM Long Distance Program will help me achieve success. I feel that I can get support from the team, and also from my fellow group members, by participating in the program, and that is a good thing.
The IDM program director and one of the educators are Megan Ramos. You may have heard Megan on the Fasting Talk Podcast, she is one of the co-hosts, along with Dr. Fung and Jimmy Moore. Megan is the IDM Program Director and Clinical Educator. She attended the University of Toronto and developed a strong interest in preventative medicine. She has worked alongside Dr. Fung for since 2003 and was the first IDM guinea pig.
It is my understanding from talking to others that when you do the LDP, Megan is very involved in that, and is probably the primary person that you will deal with.
I am looking forward to joining the LDP. My wife, Feyma, will be leaving for the United States soon. She will be working in the USA for about 5 months or so. I will be joining the LDP around the time she leaves, I feel that it will help keep me busy, something that will be important to me because I am sure I will be missing my wife very much.
For anybody interested in Dr. Fung and his IDM program, I recommend that you check out his books, they are very informative.
The Obesity Code
I am currently reading The Obesity Code. It is a book that really gives a different way of thinking about why people are obese. It is the basis for a lot of the work that Dr. Fung is doing in helping people reverse Obesity, and also in reversing diabetes. Diabetes and Obesity are closely related. Not all Diabetics are obese, nor are all obese people Diabetic, but there is a close relationship between the two. Some of the things that Dr. Fung explains in The Obesity Code really made me realize that he is the first doctor that I have ever come across who really understands about obesity and the life that I have lived as an obese person. His understanding made me listen to him more closely, and that has turned my life around. I highly recommend this book.
The Complete Guide to Fasting
Although I am obese and have been all of my life, I would have to say that Dr. Fung’s dietary fasting program has had more of an impact on me than The Obesity Code. Both are great, but the fasting has affected my health on many fronts (including obesity). I truly believe that fasting is good for anybody, even those who are already healthy. So, I really have to highly recommend that you check out The Complete Guide to Fasting. This book details how to fast, what you can and cannot do on a fast (hint, Dr. Fung is very accepting that you have to do what works for you), and other important things to know if you want to try fasting. Fasting has changed my life, and I think it can help you too.
I am excited
I really am excited to join the Long Distance Program with the Intense Dietary Management program! It is something that I am looking forward to, and I think it will only help me!
Peter Vincelli
I want to join the long distance program. I have stage 3 kidney failure, and diabetes. I have been doing Intermittent Fasting for one year. I have been eating and drinking some things that I now find out are not good for me (high in protein & potassium).
I need guidance and I am ready to start right now. I have a script from my Primary Care Physician. I was able to cut my insulin in half, but have been stalled now, and the goal is to get off this killer drug sooner rather than later.
