Back in June of 2016, I had a heart attack. If you have been reading this site, that is certainly not a secret.

I did not think I needed surgery, I wanted to handle the situation with medication and get on with my life.

For the first few months that worked well, but about 2 1/2 months later I started feeling bad and could feel that it was my heart again. So, I went in to see my cardiologist, had some tests done (primarily angiogram) to check for blockages, and got very bad news. I had 95% to 99% blockage in 4 arteries. The doctors said he did not know why I was still alive.

Surgery was in order

So, I took care of a lot of insurance requirements and went in for open heart bypass surgery. I was scared. Everybody tells you that you have to have a positive attitude and be strong. I put on that face because that is what people said they wanted to see. But, in my mind and in my heart, I thought I was going to die, and I came close.

I was in surgery for nearly 12 hours.

When I woke up in the recovery room, I didn’t realize I had already completed the surgery. When I found out that the surgery was done, I was very surprised, because I truly did not ting I would make it see the world after the surgery. You can bet, though, that I was very thankful!

Major Surgery

Before the surgery, I realized that I had never had a major operation in my life. I had a couple of minor surgical procedures, but certainly, nothing life-threatening.  I remarked to family and friends that I was going from never having any kind of major surgery to having the “King of all surgeries”. I was scared.

So, with a major surgery like this, you get cut open in a lot of places. On your chest, of course, but in several other places as well!
