Recently, I got quite a surprise. It came in the form of an email.
I received an email invitation to be a speaker at a Conference in Rome, to be held in December 2017. The topic of the conference is about Diabetes.
This is a conference that seems to be mostly for doctors and other medical professionals. I wrote back to the organizers and told them that I am not a doctor, nor am I in any way involved in the medical profession. My only connection to anything medical is that I am working hard to improve my health. I asked them if they had sent me this invitation accidentally, or perhaps they were somehow under the impression that I am a doctor (although I try hard to point that out in articles that I write and such).
They wrote back within a day or so and said that they knew I was not a doctor or any other kind of professional in the medical world, but they (somehow) found this blog and they found it very interesting, and that I had a story that many of their audience would love to hear. They had seen some articles where I commented that I had reversed my own diabetes through a low carb diet and fasting, and they did say that reversing diabetes is “highly controversial and probably doubtful,” but they wanted me to share my story.
I was absolutely flabbergasted when I got this invitation and also when I learned that it really was truly what it appeared to be.
I wrote back and told them that I would be happy to go to Rome and give such a talk, but I asked them to pay my travel expenses and also provide free admission tot he conference. I felt that these requests were reasonable. I mean, if they had a desire to hear what I have done, this would be a small price to pay. I have not asked for any kind of speaker’s fee or anything, only that my expenses be covered.
They wrote back, and are pretty much unwilling to cover expenses. They did offer me one free pass to the conference (which costs them nothing) and “possibly” one night in a hotel. The vast majority of the cost is the airfare (prices for the round trip range from $750 and up).
I would really like to do this, and think it would be an interesting experience. But, I also feel that if they wish for me to tell them about what I am doing, it should not be asking too much for the conference organizers to cover my costs of doing so.
I will say, I find this to be an awesome opportunity, and I am amazed that they have presented me with the opportunity.
What do you think I should do?
